Concord, the leading brand for professional and architectural lighting solutions, has brightened up the external façade of Union Square, an award-winning luxury student accommodation development in Newcastle. The new lighting scheme incorporates innovative external lighting solutions from SIMES, which is exclusively distributed in the UK by Concord, and has been used to great effect to reflect the exclusiveness of the apartments enabling Union Square to be the market leader in the competitive student accommodation market in the city.
The recently completed project was carried out by construction company Brims Construction, on behalf of the Adderstone Group, a privately owned property development company. The aim of the project was to light up the eight-storey accommodation block, which is currently home to 233 students, in an attractive and contemporary way.
With a number of products from Italian specialist outdoor lighting SIMES and from Concord’s group company, Feilo Sylvania and Brims were able to execute an outstanding lighting arrangement. SIMES was responsible for illuminating the perimeter of the building with both direct and indirect wall-mounted Megalift Squares. These create a wide beam downwards and a sharp beam upwards, whilst adding symmetry to the overall lighting scheme. For the building’s courtyard, the SIMES Reef 360° produces a sharp beam of light every 90 degrees to help illuminate the intricate brickwork, giving it a contemporary appearance, as well as providing a clear entrance to the building. However, it was ensured that the lighting would not intrude students’ windows at this level.
Sine Consulting Associate Director, David Warner is thrilled with the outcome of the project. He comments: ‘We couldn’t be happier with the way in which the SIMES and Havells Sylvania products have enhanced the Union Square development. Thanks to its subtle, non-dominating lighting installations, the building is now, without a doubt, a striking feature within the Newcastle skyline and is fully deserving of all its awards.”
Union Square has recently been recognised with the awards for the Newcastle Student Hall of the Year, North East Student Hall of the Year and the Director of Exchange Residential, Lindsey Green, has also scooped the prize for the North East Student Property Manager of the Year. Located in the enormously cultural and student-filled Upper Ouseburn area of Newcastle, the development is considered a well-located and high-end student accommodation option.
Internally, Feilo Sylvania’s Lumiance InVerto Direct luminaires in a satin silver finish were added to the building’s balconies. Combining a sleek design with LED technology ensures the InVerto is perfectly suited to provide an energy efficient light source for up to 50,000 hours. The 40° beam angle provides unobtrusive light, as well as adding visual interest to the façade. The product is also convenient to residents as they are able to control the lighting levels themselves and cater to their own personal preference.
