In the latest phase of upgrade work at the historic central London venue – which is used to host a range of events including corporate meetings – Richard Horley Lighting Ltd (RHL) has installed Tamlite Lighting LED products to provide more complementary uplighting.

It is an oft-used cliché to observe that a venue is situated in ‘the heart of London’, but in the case of Tallow Chandlers’ Hall it is absolutely true. Indeed, it is at the very centre of the capital’s past and present, located just a few minutes away from the London Stone.

But while its historical provenance is unquestionable; so too is its present day observance of technological trends and possibilities. The venue’s multiple halls are used for all kinds of events, ranging from seated dinners to corporate functions, and as such they obviously require a lighting system capable of coping with these varied requirements.

Accordingly, RHL has been working on a rolling programme of lighting upgrades over the past few years in order to improve the quality of illumination. The focus of the latest phase was on enhancing the standard of uplighting in the Livery Hall. “They wanted the ability to go brighter, but with a very wide and soft dispersion, and to minimise a drop-off of light levels across the ceiling,” explains RHL founder Richard Horley.

The existing T8 fluorescent up-lighting system was “very much on its last legs” when Horley’s team first inspected the site back in 2015. A next-generation LED-based system was the obvious replacement, but it was only when Horley visited the LuxLive trade show later the same year and encountered Tamlite’s MICRO LED XL products that he knew he had found the ideal solution.

“It took a few months before I had the demo system in my hand, but it sold itself as soon as I demonstrated it,” confirmed Horley. The ability to achieve more effective control over the lighting was another important component of the upgrade, hence RHL’s specification of an Anytronics Contractor pack and DALI module. Horley commented, “It provides a fully programmed day-to-day system for the client to use. In addition, there is a DMX access facility so that a visiting lighting designer can take control of the hall’s lighting system for a particular event, should that be required.”

Finished in white in order to complement the venue’s distinctive interior design, the MICRO LED XLs were supplied and installed on a quick turnaround. “The client is delighted by the improvement they have given to the standard of lighting. Once again Tamlite has underlined its ability to provide the latest LED solutions to suit.” said Horley.
