Fitzgerald Lighting has been recently been involved in the installation of a new LED lighting scheme at Better Bodmin Leisure Centre.

Established in 1993, GLL is the largest UK-based charitable social enterprise delivering leisure, health and community services. Under the consumer facing brand Better, GLL operates 258 public sports and leisure facilities, 88 libraries, 10 children’s centres and five adventure playgrounds in partnership with 50 local councils, public agencies and sporting organisations.

Fitzgerald Lighting’s Hi Sport LED luminaire was installed by award-winning building services management organisation Sherwoods. Sherwoods was appointed by GLL to upgrade Bodmin Leisure Centre’s existing lighting to deliver an improved light quality and reduce their expenditure through lower energy bills and maintenance. Fitzgerald Lighting designed a special 133W Hi Sport LED luminaire for this project that could be easily installed into the pitch of the ceiling, without the need for trunking, and which met the required lux levels for an indoor tennis facility to LTA standards. 80 luminaires were used for the tennis centre sports hall.

Kevin Wiltshire, Contracts Manager at Sherwoods Building Services commented, “We are proud to have completed the LED lighting upgrade at Bodmin Leisure centre on time and within budget whilst achieving the specification determined by the customer. The project to install 80 Fitzgerald Hi Sport LED low energy fittings has achieved excellent results of 540 Lux at the centre of each court. Centre staff and customers on site have commented that the results are superb and will provide them with an amazing venue for tennis for years to come.”

Martin Mullin, Centre Manager at Bodmin Leisure Centre commented, “The lighting we had in place before the installation was pretty dire, so having the new system installed has made a huge difference. Not only is the lighting better, but we have really good even coverage and no shadows on the courts. The system will also save us a significant amount of energy long term, so we will be tracking the results over the next few months.”

He continued, “The system is bespoke for tennis courts, so all the lights are suitably placed over the lines. With the lighting level now compliable to LTA standards, customer satisfaction is definitely noticeable. We have also upgraded the lighting in our changing rooms to LED, so our members receive good lighting levels and coverage both on and off the courts. We are very pleased with the results and would recommend the system to others.”

Following on from this Bodmin project, Fitzgerald Lighting has just completed a second installation of Hi Sport LED luminaires at St Austell Leisure Centre.

The LED Hi Sport is a purpose-built, durable luminaire designed for indoor sports environments. Manufactured from mild steel and powder coated white, it has a stylish curved body shape which minimises the chance of sports balls and equipment getting trapped. A diffuser shields the LEDs to reduce glare distraction during high performance sports events and the luminaire also features a wire guard as standard. Designed for surface or suspension mounting, the Hi Sport luminaire features swivel adjustment and has a shock resistant gear tray. Optional features can be specified including 1–10V dimming, DALI dimming and integral three-hour maintained emergency lighting.

The LED Hi Sport from Fitzgerald Lighting is ideal for all indoor sports applications, including sports halls, leisure centres, squash courts and indoor training areas.

Made to IP20 and carrying a five-year warranty, the LED Hi Sport comes in a 126W, 13000 lumen version and a 96W, 9730 lumen version. Both luminaires are quite compact, being just 145mm deep, 340mm wide and 835mm long. Other wattage options are also available.
