The most advanced car showroom of its type in the UAE utilises all LED lighting from Reggiani for maximum impact

Over 1,600 sq. metres of programmable LEDs from Reggiani UK have been used to great effect at ‘The Toyota Wave’ – the largest and most advanced Toyota flagship store in the Middle East. The impressive retail and service space, part of Al-Futtaim Motors, is the largest of its type in the UAE. It is located in an expansive 14,000 sq. metre area of Abu Dhabi and occupies five floors that can accommodate more than 80 new and used models on display and a service area that includes 64 simultaneous working bays working on up to 250 cars per day. This awe-inspiring flagship building incorporates a series of customer zones, a gallery, handover lounge, café, digital design studio, service centre and a play area for children that includes electric cars and 100 metres of track.

Al-Futtaim Motors, a leader in sustainable mobility and an exclusive distributor of Toyota in the UAE for the past 61 years, operates a large network of showrooms and service centres, offering world-class service at every point of the customer experience. The company wanted each step of the customer journey to be designed to include multiple forms of physical and digital interactions, answering all visitors’ interests and needs during their time at the facility. The interior space has been designed by UK-based Interior Architects Greenspace, a design consultancy firm that specialises in creating legacy experience destinations and who was also selected for a history of working with Toyota Motors Europe and other automotive retail brands.

The building itself gets its name from the singular design of its curved exterior which resembles a wave and which is reflected along the length of each floor by suspended white fins that are contoured from the front to the back on every level.

Saud Abbasi, Managing Director of Toyota at Al-Futtaim Motors, commented : “The Wave is not just a unique building that pushes the boundaries of modern architecture, it is a representation of our dedication to customer service excellence. We have designed the facility to put the customer first, and to offer all our guests interactive and engaging experiences regardless of the purpose of their visit.”

Greenspace designers and Reggiani worked closely to create an energy-efficient, low maintenance lighting scheme that reflects the personality of the wave. Incorporating creativity with practicality they designed a unique look and feel for each zone to aid the customer’s journey throughout the facility, be it the colour-changing café with RGB LEDs or the dramatic 1000 lumen per boot and per bonnet in the main car showroom that also boasts Reggiani’s Roll IoS complete with barn doors and DALI dimming. The luminaires can be controlled via an iPad through 99 different combinations to set the desired variety of scenes. Elsewhere, recessed Linea Luce were installed and set up for sequential operation at the exit from the service zone on the ground floor to create the impression of chevrons showing the way out, whilst ceiling recessed Low LEDs have been concealed between wooden baffles on either side of the travelators.

Greenspace CEO and Founder Adrian Caddy, said: “As a London-based company with a specialist reputation, we were delighted to be chosen by Al-Futtaim Motors to work on this project. Right from the start, we were challenged by the team at Al-Futtaim Motors to create a legacy experience by setting a new global standard in retail and brand experience for Toyota, driving the brand’s idea of ‘Passion for Better,’ which became the strategic focus and creative inspiration for all the interior elements and experiential design development over the course of The Wave’s development.”
