Zumtobel Group brands Zumtobel Lighting and acdc were chosen to supply the luminaires for the prestigious £65million Silver Fin office development. The new building will provide state-of-the-art office space in Aberdeen with Zumtobel’s MLV, Slotlight and Panos fittings along with acdc’s Orelle 24 and Resclite ems fixtures installed to meet the stringent criteria of energy savings throughout.

The “Silver Fin” branding relates to a number of vertical aluminum fins, which will clad all elevations of the tower element to catch the light for all to see and instantly recognise. The 132,000 sq. ft. building comprises nine floors of open plan office space, a dramatic four storey reception hall, five 17 person passenger lifts, 140 underground car parking spaces and unrivalled views across Aberdeen City Centre and beyond. The development is expected to play a pivotal role in the redevelopment of the west end of Union Street, which is Aberdeen’s key civic thoroughfare.

M&E Consultants Tüv Süd in Conjunction with Architects Cooper Cromar designed and specified the lighting, with installation of the lighting carried out by Infrastructure Group Balfour Beatty. The specified lighting utilised Zumtobel’s latest generation of Mellow Light V chosen for its unrivalled efficiency and impressive design for the new Grade A office space. Its understated stylistic idiom is teamed with uncompromising lighting technology that achieves light output ratio levels of up to 96 percent and low direct glare. Mellow Light is characterised by its special lighting effect and uniformity, with a choice of three optics: the Brightness optic for maximum efficiency and free arrangement, the High Definition optic for superb balance of efficiency and aesthetics and the MicroVane optic, which is suitable for applications where there are exacting requirements with respect to glare control at angles above 65 percent. These Mellow Light luminaires have been precisely tailored with a special RAL colour to harmonise with the ceiling.

Zumtobel’s Slotlight and Panos downlights have been utilised in the stunning reception area to provide soothingly pure, uniform illumination. Slotlight provides flexible uniformity at the highest level, using LED lighting points that can have any spacing pitch and visual benefits are achieved by its continuous-row system that is illuminated absolutely uniformly from beginning to end. Slotlight is a role model in terms of economic efficiency too, with a service life of 50,000 hours and incredibly low maintenance. Panos downlights blend seamlessly into the surrounding décor with compact proportions that belie the power and efficiency of the luminaire. Temperatures can be adjusted to suit individual preference and supply a constant quality of illumination. Panos has a highly efficient passive cooling system, a 50,000 hour life and future-proofing though it’s modular cartridge system.

acdc’s Orelle 24, miniature, compact 24v linear has been installed in the coffers in throughout the reception area, delivering in excess of 1100 lumens per metre and excellent colour rendering. Orelle provides a truly outstanding light to size ratio and acdc’s built-in heat sink technology maintains a cool LED junction temperature. Slotlight has also been used to provide just the right amount of illumination in the lift/lobby areas. Emergency lighting throughout the building is provided by Zumtobel’s Resclite antipanic, high performance ED ceiling recessed luminaires.
