Zumtobel Lighting has supplied a variety of luminaires for ‘The Bower’, a complex £24 million office upgrade and extension project at Stockley Park near Heathrow. The existing three-storey property has been transformed into one of the largest and most highly-specified new office developments in the Thames Valley region.

The scheme involves major structural alterations to reconfigure, modernise and extend the 1980s era building, creating circa 137,000 sq ft of Grade A, BREEAM Excellent rated office accommodation. In addition to improving the aesthetics, thermal performance and efficiency of the building, the original footprint of the building has been extended by the construction of two new wings, adding 20,000 sq ft of accommodation to the original property, providing the largest single office floor-plate in the Thames Valley. The refurbishment also involves the removal of two internal stair cores and the construction of five external staircases as part of extensive changes to the internal layout. The existing atrium has been demolished to be replaced by a new spacious and contemporary atrium with a feature staircase and high-specification reception area.

The Zumtobel team came up with a solution that included Lightfields, Slotlight Infinity and Panos Infinity Q luminaires to provide low maintenance and high energy savings throughout the facility. Zumtobel’s Lightfields is a family of luminaires that includes recessed, surface mounted, free-standing and pendant, allowing flexible and energy efficient lighting schemes with a coordinated aesthetic. Energy savings are high with Lightfields due to its unique MPO+ micro-pyramidal optic combined with booster technology. For this project, a bespoke 1400mm x 300mm SAS 330 variety with a 5% matt diffuser, and a RAL 9016 bezel was produced to match the ceiling tiles perfectly.

Slotlight infinity has been installed in the reception area to provide an elegant and architecturally sophisticated solution with uniform illumination, even around corners. Slotlight infinity has also been utilised in the lift lobbies, stair cores and toilets, including 23m long runs with a single piece uninterrupted diffuser around the stair cores. With its linear design and high precision illumination, Slotlight delivers a continuous vein of light that results in a truly integrated, low energy solution. PANOS INFINITY Q has been used around the perimeter of the open plan office, to open up a new dimension of lighting quality to open up a new dimension of lighting quality, efficiency and design. A matt diffuser was incorporated to provide a soft scallop of light on the walls. Four different reflector surface finishes provide glare control up to UGR 19 and, with its outstanding luminaire efficiency of more than 100 lm/W, the PANOS INFINITY Q takes the lead among downlights currently available with respect to colour rendering, outperforming all LED downlights with an Ra level of over 90.

To add to the buildings impressive environmental credentials, the façade will be re-instated and features extensive areas of glazing and high performance cladding and as part of the project, ISG will comprehensively upgrade and modernise the office’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure, installing new highly-efficient building services and roof-mounted photovoltaic cells to generate emission-free electricity. Part of the Zumtobel Group, acdc provided its Vista luminaires for external illumination in the area leading up to the entrance.
